FON Parallel Event at CSW 68

Workshop: International Protection of the Rights of Women: Theory and Practice in the UN system

The Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) is the principal global intergovernmental body that is exclusively dedicated to the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women.

During the Commission’s annual two-week session, representatives of UN Member States, civil society organizations and UN entities gather at UN headquarters in New York. They discuss progress and gaps in the implementation of the 1995 Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, the key global policy document on gender equality, and the 23rd special session of the General Assembly held in 2000 (Beijing+5), as well as emerging issues that affect gender equality and the empowerment of women.

This year, the 68th CSW will take place in New York between Marth 11 to 22 and FON will be present.

FIDH will offer a one-day workshop on international instruments for the protection of the rights of women. Demonstrate where change is needed in national legislation and policies to ensure respect for the rights of women and girls, particularly in relation to the fight against SGBV and access to justice for survivors, highlight the growing importance for feminist civil society organizations to fully engage with human rights bodies and instruments in advancing the rights of women at the national, regional and international levels. The training also aims to build understanding how the UN system works, the possibilities for participation and mobilization, and the opportunities for advocacy, thereby enabling CSOs campaigning against gender-based violence to make their actions more effective.

The workshop will allow FON feminist CSOs to also practically engage with the UN-CSW system, test their advocacy strategies, and eventually to be able to bring their priorities to the UN’s women’s rights mechanisms and bodies space in the future.
